Intermediate Championship

Islandeady played the last game of the group stages of the Mayo Intermediate Championship on Saturday last. The venue was Páirc Naomh Muire,Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, and the supporters were treated to an exciting match that was in the balance right up to the final whistle. An early goal from Nathan McGee fired up the Shrule/Glencorrib side and they then put four points over the bar in succession, leaving Islandeady trailing by a goal and two points. However, Islandeady settled and recorded six points to leave the teams level at the half-time break. Halfway through the second half, the teams were level again, 1-9 to Shrule/Glencorrib, 0-12 to Islandeady. Five minutes from the final whistle, they were again head to head, 1-11 to Shrule/Glencorrib, 0-14 to Islandeady. With less than a minute to spare, Islandeady supporters looked anxiously on as their team trailed by a single point, memories of Croke Park still very fresh. However, Darragh Joyce calmly stroked the ball over the bar from a free and levelled the scoring just before the final whistle. The final score was Islandeady 0-15, Shrule/Glencorrib 1-12. Scorers for Islandeady were Darragh Joyce 0-8, Diarmuid Gibbons 0-2, Cormac Gordon 0-2, Brendan Gibbons 0-1, Seamie Lally 0-1, Danny McGowan 0-1.Islandeady are now top of their group, and await the draw for the next round.
