A Satisfactory Conclusion

It was with some edginess that the Islandeady team and its loyal band of supporters headed to James Stephens Park in Ballina on Sunday last to compete for the right to play Intermediate level championship football next year. They played great football all year, winning all games but one in the Division 1C league to take the trophy. Superb displays ended in nail-biting finishes in the Intermediate championship, but unfortunately they ended up at the losing end each time, by the tightest of margins. This brought them to a relegation play-off against Cill Chomáin. The stakes were high; only the winners would retain Intermediate status for another year. Cormac Gordon took a superb goal while the reliable Darragh Joyce scored three points. Two points came from Vinnie Feeney whose calm, experienced presence was a deciding factor in the successful outcome for Islandeady. Cill Chomáin scored five points, and the margin between the two teams at the break was just one goal. Islandeady began to settle and play well, pulling ahead of their opponents, when a goal from Cill Chomáin reminded them that the game wasn’t over. With their supporters anxiously checking their watches, Islandeady took some more points, and at the final whistle were comfortably ahead. The final score was 1-13 to 1-9 in favour of Islandeady. Scorers in the second half for Islandeady were Darragh Joyce (0-2), Brendan Gibbons (0-2), Liam Joyce (0-2), Darragh O’ Malley (0-1) and Cormac Gordon (0-1).
